At the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Sheriffs in the Detentions / Court Services classification normally come into the Department as Cadets.
Cadets are paid at the rate of $33.95 per hour as they go through the 16-week Detentions / Court Services Academy.
Upon graduation, Cadets are then promoted to the Deputy Sheriff: Detentions / Court Services classification. The base pay for a Deputy Sheriff in Detentions / Court Services is $57,791.50 - $103,737.40 annually.
The following are additional pay incentives and premiums that are available for those who are eligible:
- New Lateral Incentive Pays up to $20,000
- Night Shift Premium/ Shift Differential - 5% with four (4) or more hours worked between 5:00 PM - 8:00 AM
- In-Service Training Premium - $45 biweekly
- Bilingual Premium - $32.30 biweekly
- Prisoner Transportation Premium - 3% of base pay
- Detective Assignment Premium - 5% of base pay
- Corporal Assignment Premium - 5% of base pay

Work Schedule
As a Deputy Sheriff Detentions/Court Services, your detentions schedule will likely involve 12.5 hour shifts, with alternating 2- and 5-day periods of work and rest. You will work 7 days or nights in each 14 day pay period. Below is one example of a Detentions Work Schedule.
