Deputy Sheriff Detentions Courts

A Detentions/Courts Deputy Sheriff provides a full range of security and custodial functions within the detention and court facilities. He/she maintains security in the courtrooms and premises and preserves order among spectators and participants during court proceedings.

LOCATION ASSIGNMENT

Initially, upon graduating from the Academy, you will be assigned to a detention facility in one of the following geographical areas:

  • Downtown San Diego
  • Otay Mesa
  • Santee
  • Chula Vista
  • Vista

After serving at a detention facility for one year you may submit a transfer request to the Court Services Bureau.

The county courthouses are located in the following geographical areas:

  • Chula Vista
  • El Cajon
  • Downtown San Diego
  • Kearny Mesa
  • Vista

SPECIALIZED POSITIONS

As a Deputy Sheriff for a detention facility or courthouse, you may apply for the following specialized positions (Note: Specialized positions with a asterisk * are part of the Career Assessment Process (CAPS)):

  • Academy Training Officer*
    Train new cadets at the Deputy Sheriff-Detentions/Courts Academy
  • Backgrounds Investigator*
    Conduct background investigations on all prospective sworn Detentions/Court employees and others as required
  • Court Deputy
    Ensure that all inmates attend court as scheduled
  • Detentions Investigator*
    Investigate crimes that have been committed within the detentions facilities
  • Facilities Development Team*
    Work with private agencies, local and state government in the development of new detention facilities
  • Inmate Worker Deputy
    Select and supervise inmate workers
  • Jail Population Management Deputy*
    House inmates in the appropriate locations, using computer resources, and criminal histories
  • Jail Information Management System (JIMS) Deputy*
    Manage the Jail Information Management Computer System
  • K-9*
    Trained and highly skilled dogs are used to assist deputies in the detection and apprehension of suspects
  • Operations/Administrations Deputy
    Assist the command staff in the day-to-day operation of the jail
  • Recruiting*
    Recruit qualified candidates from all segments of the community for a career as a Deputy Sheriff or Deputy Sheriff-Detentions/Courts
  • Training Coordinator
    Coordinate the training program in each jail
  • Training Officer
    Train new Deputies in jail operations
  • Court Training Officer
    Train new Deputies in court operations
  • Transition Team*
    Work with a team of deputies, supervisors and other staff to institute new policies and procedures in a newly constructed detention facility
  • Transportation Deputy*
    Operate various vehicles for transporting inmates

SCHEDULE

Detention Facility Schedule

As a Deputy Sheriff for a detention facility, you will work a 12.5 schedule, 5 days on and 5 days off, 2 days on and 2 days off.  Shifts change from days to nights every 3-4 months.

Court Schedule

As a Deputy Sheriff for a courthouse, you will work Monday thru Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm.
